NovaPrene Polymer Bitumen Additive

NovaPrene Polymer Bitumen Additive

The most commonly used additives in bitumen modification are styrene-butadiene block copolymers (SB-BC). Some members of this family are also known as SBS. When these elastomeric additives are mixed with bitumen, they significantly improve its properties. As a result, the performance of asphalt mixtures produced with polymer-modified bitumen (PmB) using this method has remarkably improved over the years in terms of:

  • Wheel tracking (permanent deformation),
  • Thermal cracking,
  • Fatigue cracking,
  • Resistance to aging.

NovaPrene is a high-performance PmB additive consisting of two components: Liquid NovaPrene-P and Solid NovaPrene-S. They are designed to be used together.

NovaPrene-P Liquid Component: Contains polyphosphoric acid. It is an inorganic polymer mixture with high saturation.

NovaPrene-S Solid Component: An elastomeric-based polymer-modified bitumen additive produced from a composition of different polymers from the styrene-butadiene block copolymer (SB-BC) family. NovaPrene-S is a high molecular weight SB block copolymer composed of diblock and triblock mixtures.

Advantages:

  • High storage stability.
  • Low investment cost.
  • Increased resistance to wheel tracking, fatigue cracking, thermal cracking, and peeling.
  • Allows for quick and high-capacity production of PmB with low energy consumption.
  • Savings on the amount of polymer used.
  • Results in a lower viscosity asphalt mixture due to the use of a smaller amount of polymer, especially providing easier workability in Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) applications.
  • Improves the aging (oxidation) properties of bitumen.
